Diabetes, obesity rates increasing: report
The New South Wales Government says there is no room for complacency following the release of a report on the state's health.

The chief health officer's report found that while people are living longer and the death rates from cancer and heart disease are at a record low, rates of obesity and diabetes are increasing sharply.

The report also found children in particular are not eating the recommended amount of vegetables and are drinking too much soft drink.

NSW Health Minister John Hatzistergos says he is concerned by the report's findings.

"We also have a situation where in 2005 around 50 per cent of the adult population were either overweight or obese," he said.

"So we have to continue to reinforce messages about having both a healthy food intake and a healthy exercise regime, so we can have a balanced lifestyle, good quality of life and a long life expectancy."
